CHAPTER 1

The sun warms the towering foyer of Hunley Hall, and its rays of light shine through the large full-length windows, suddenly creating a looming shadow. It takes only a moment to spot the resident assistant of the dorms, seated in a shaft of sunlight at the reception desk, scanning through forms. A student with cocoa-brown skin and braids flowing past her shoulders like ropes of black ribbon strides forward, waiting with an unenthusiastic expression until the RA looks up.

“I’m Rose, and I was told that someone was looking for me.”

The RA stares at Rose with a momentary look of puzzlement. Then her eyes brighten. “Oh, yes! Rosewood Brooks, correct?”

Rose nods.

The RA searches the cluttered surface of the desk until she finds a yellow sticky note hidden under a stack of papers. She holds up the note to read it. “Okay, let’s see here. It says you had a visitor a couple of hours ago.”

Rose looks back at the half-empty lobby as if to see if she can spot the person who’d come to visit. Seeing no one, she turns her attention back to the RA “You want to tell me who it was?”

“Oh, yes. Her name was Donna. Donna Brooks.”

“You mean Dayna?”

The RA squints at the sticky note. “Oh yes, Dayna Brooks.”

Rose’s eyes grow wide. “That’s my older sister. Did she leave a message?”

The RA shakes her head. “Nope. It doesn’t say anything here.”

“Well, why would someone from the front desk come looking for me if there’s no message?”

The RA looks at the sticky note again. “Let’s see. It just says here to reach you as soon as possible.”

With no sight of Dayna in the lobby, Rose walks outside and looks around. “Why would Dayna be here?” she mumbles.

She decides to go back to her room to get her phone off the charger. As she reenters the lobby, she glances at both wings out of habit, then continues to her room. In just a split second she comes to a screeching halt. There, sleeping in a chair tucked in the far corner of the lobby next to a giant pillar is her six-year-old niece, Hazel. She’s wearing a backpack, and there’s a small suitcase parked in front of her.
